DOCTRINAL CONVICTIONS

OF GOD’S GREATEST

SPIRITUAL GIANTS

CONCERNING

REPENTANCE

AND

THE LORDSHIP

OF CHRIST

AS REVEALED IN

THEIR OWN WORDS

CONVICTIONS OF GREAT MEN OF GOD WHO PREACHED BIBLICAL TRUTHS

The following are written statements from some great Christian preachers of the past whose lives and ministries were highly respected by all Christians.

1.C. H. Spurgeon —“Dear friend, salvation would be a sadly incomplete affair, if it did not deal with the whole part of our ruined estate. We want to be purified as pardoned. Justification without sanctification would not be salvation at all. It would call the leper clean and leave him to die of his disease; it would forgive the rebellion and allow the rebel to remain an enemy of his King. It would remove the consequence but overlook the cause, and this would leave an endless and hopeless task before us. It would stop the stream for a time, but leave an open fountain of defilement which would sooner or later break forth with increased power.”

2.C. H. Spurgeon —“I have never preached to you that you may live in sin if you only believe in Jesus: I have never preached that you shall be saved without being purified in heart.”

  1. 3.  James A. Stewart—“What strange kind of salvation does the seeking sinner desire who cares not for holiness? Who has no inclination to separate himself from sin and the world? Who rebels against the lordship of Christ? Who does not intend to become a bond-slave of Jesus Christ?”

4.Murray McCheyne—“Dear friends, you may have awakenings, enlightenings, experiences, a full heart in prayers, and many signs, but if ye lack holiness you will never see the Lord. A real desire after complete holiness is the truest mark of having been born again. The Saviour first covers the soul with His white raiment, then makes the soul glorious within—restores the lost image of God, and fills the soul with pure heavenly holiness. Unregenerate men among you cannot bear this.”

5. A. W. Towzer—“The idea that God will pardon a rebel who has not given up his rebellion is contrary both to the Scriptures and to common sense. How horrible to contemplate a church full of persons who have been pardoned but who still love sin and hate the ways of righteousness. And how much more horrible to think of heaven as filled with sinners who had not repented nor changed their way of living.”

6. Jonathan Edwards—“Holy practice is the proper evidence of saving faith.”

7.Charles Finney—“Repentance is … a condition of our justification.... It must be certain that the government of God cannot pardon sin without repentance…. It is self-evident that, until the sinner breaks off from sins by repentance or turning to God, he cannot be justified in any sense. This is everywhere assumed, implied, and taught in the Bible.

  1. 8.Charles Finney—“A sanctifying faith unites the believer to Christ as his justification; but be it always remembered, that no faith receives Christ as a justification, that does not receive him as a sanctification, to reign within the heart.”

  2. 9.Dr. Adrian Rodgers— The following is a statement from a recorded sermon by the late Dr. Adrian Rodgers, pastor of Belview Baptist Church, Memphis, TN and one-time president of the Southern Baptist Convention.

—“If you don’t receive who He is you cannot have what He gives.”

10. Brother Lester L. Roloff —The following are quotations taken from recorded sermons preached by the late evangelist Lester L. Roloff. Brother Roloff was recognized by all as a man who truly walked with God, knew and loved the Bible, lived according to it, and preached God’s Word as faithfully, as accurately, and as powerfully as any preacher has ever done in modern times.

1—“You cannot be saved until you come to accept the doctrine of the lordship of Christ.”

2—“If a man ever truly repents he has a permanent perpetual hatred for sin all the rest of his life and throughout eternity.”

3—“No man ever gets right with the Lord without it purifying his morals.”

11. Brother Lester Roloff—The following excerpt was taken from the Statement of Faith written by Brother Lester Roloff and printed in the brochure of the People’s Baptist Church and Ministries while he still pastored the church.

“We believe that repentance and faith are the two steps into the ark of safety and both are essential.  We believe the repentance and faith that brings salvation makes a new creature in Christ Jesus and gives a perpetual hatred for sin and stops sin as the habit of life.”

It seems incredible that some contemporary “so-called” Christians could have strayed so far from the faith delivered to us by these our spiritual predecessors who were indeed “the real men of God” in their day. Yet, the “easy-believism” crowd that says a person can get saved while rejecting the lordship of Christ has surely differed drastically in doctrinal belief and practice from all the above quoted spiritual giants.

THE MESSAGE OF THE BIBLE

All the New Testament apostles and disciples preached the lordship of Christ.

—Acts 11:20, “And some of them were men of Cyprus and Cyrene, which, when they were come to Antioch spake unto the Grecians, preaching the Lord Jesus.”

—2 Corinthians 4:5, “For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord.”

The apostle Paul, the Premier Preacher of Grace, declared that to be saved the sinner must verbally confess the lordship of Christ, that is, believe on Jesus as Lord, and love and serve Him as Lord.

—Romans 10:9, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.”

—Acts 16:31, “And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.”

—1 Corinthians 16:22, “If any man love not the Lord Jesus Christ, let him be Anathema Maranatha.”

The apostle Peter said that the Old Testament prophets preached the necessity of calling on the name of the Lord to be saved.  He also said God has made Christ Lord.

—Acts 2:21, “And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

—Acts 2:36, “Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made the same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ.”

The Lord Jesus Christ Himself said only those  who yield to His lordship are saved.

—Matthew 7:21,  “Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.”

—John 13:13,  “Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am.”

If you have not repented of your sins and surrendered your life to the LORD JESUS CHRIST please do it now before you condemn your soul to hell for all eternity. To surrender is not to work for salvation, as some suggest. It is to cease all your efforts, as a defeated soldier does in battle! Let Christ save you “from”  your “sins” (Matthew 1:21) and give you a new life with a new desire for His holiness. The Lord Jesus  loves you and He is ready to forgive your previous rebellion if you will surrender to Him and stop trying to earn your right to be saved. Please stop trying to deserve salvation and just surrender to the Lord. Let Jesus Christ become your LORD and the Saviour of your entire life. You can do this now by praying personally to Him.

—Romans 10:13, “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

If you will pray now and surrender your life to Jesus Christ and receive Him as your only Lord and your all sufficient Savior, please send me an email to the address below so that I can rejoice with you and pray for you.
