Comfort One Another
God Comforts His Bereaved Children
I.God gives a very special and comforting grace to Christians during times of bereavement.
? I know this from personal experience. When my seven-year old son drowned in 1965, my loving and compassionate Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, gave that special and very comforting grace to me. Years later when my dear wife went to be with God through death God again blessed me with that same unexplainable comfort.
† Those awful times of incomprehensible grief and sorrow truly became occasions of sweet and precious fellowship with my wonderful God. Yes! I was sad, yet through God’s Word I received an inner peace and consolation from my Lord Jesus that cannot be explained.
II.God Comforts Christians in bereavement through the wonderful knowledge that He gives about death through His written Word. Death indeed is precious. “Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his saints” (Psalm 116:15).
? The Hebrew word translated “Precious” means valued to the utmost as the most precious of all stones is valued. That means that God esteems the death of one of His children as something most extraordinarily good. Therefore, the physical death of a Christian in no sense could be considered to be something bad! Of course, I’m talking only about the specific event of dying and not about the suffering that might precede that event.
1.WHY THE DEATH OF A CHRISTIAN IS PRECIOUS TO GOD
? The death of a Christian is “precious” (most extraordinarily good) to God because through death God brings home to Himself one of His children
whom He so dearly loves. God’s final goal for all Christians is to bring them into His very presence. THAT GLORIOUS EVENT ALWAYS IS UNSPEAKABLY WONDERFUL! The apostle Paul wrote with complete assurance about this great event of going to be with God through physical death.
—2 Corinthians 5:1, 6-8, “For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens . . . 6 Therefore we are always confident, knowing that, whilst we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord: 7 (For we walk by faith, not by sight:) 8 We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.”
2.WHY THE DEATH OF A CHRISTIAN IS PRECIOUS TO HIM OR TO HER WHO DIES
A. The death of a Christian always is precious to him or to her who dies because it is not really death as we normally think of it. It is not the fatal ending of a human life. Rather, it is the immediate glorious beginning of that same human life in a wonderful new spiritual realm. It is simply the sudden departure of the living spirit and soul of the Christian from the dead physical body, and their immediate and direct entrance into the spiritual realm. Our Lord Jesus Christ talked about the death of a Christian as not really being death (ceasing to exist).
—John 11:25, 26, “I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: 26 And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. . . .”
B. The death of a Christian always is precious to him or to her who dies because it brings that dear one the unspeakable joy of being ushered immediately into the presence of our Savior God, the blessed Lord Jesus Christ, whom we love so dearly and so earnestly long to see.
—Psalm 16:11, “Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.”
—Acts 2:28, “Thou hast made known to me the ways of life; thou shalt make me full of joy with thy countenance.”
Therefore, to die really is gain for the Christian. The apostle Paul, wrote about his own death saying that his death would be “far better” than his continuing to live.
—Philippians 1:21-23, “For to me . . . to die is gain. . . . 23 For I am in a strait betwixt two, having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which is far better.”
C. The death of a Christian always is precious to him or to her who dies because it holds no fear, torment, or terror for a child of God. The everlasting punishment for his or her sins no longer awaits the Christian at death. The “sting of death” (the awaiting punishment for sins) has been removed from him or her! He or she has been pardoned! He or she is no longer guilty, but has received the very righteousness of Christ! His or her sins have already been paid for by Jesus Christ some 2000 years ago on the cross! Jesus Christ has already become guilty in his or her place!
—1 Corinthians 15:54-57, “. . . Death is swallowed up in victory. 55 O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? 56 The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”.
3.WHY THE DEATH OF A CHRISTIAN SHOULD BE PRECIOUS TO BEREAVED LOVED ONES
? The death of a Christian also should be precious to bereaved Christians because they should be undeniably happy that their departed loved one has suddenly entered into the “joy of the Lord.” Our Lord Jesus Christ told His disciples that they should rejoice over His own death.
—John 14:28, “If ye loved me, ye would rejoice, because I said, I go unto the Father. . . .”
? Therefore, the bereaved Christian should be happy for the departed loved one who is much better off, having escaped this wicked world with all its sufferings, and having gone immediately into the glorious presence of God Himself.
III.God Comforts Christians in bereavement through the wonderful knowledge that Christians will be reunited with all their loved ones who die “in the Lord.”
—1 Thessalonians 4:13-18, “But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope.”
•Here God teaches us that we should learn the Biblical truths (not “be ignorant”) about our loved ones who have passed on (“are asleep”). Otherwise, we Christians would grieve and “have no hope” just as all unbelievers grieve without hope at the death of a loved one. There is no hope for them!
14, “For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.”
• First of all, if we as Christians really “believe that Jesus died and rose again,” as we think we do and say we do, then we also should BE SURE that “them also which sleep in Jesus (our departed Christian loved ones) will God bring with him” at His Second Coming. In verses 15-18 God clearly teachs us about Christ’s soon return.
• Secondly, we should believe that our loved ones have not ceased to exist, neither are they asleep in the grave. They already are in the presence of Jesus Christ. In verse 14 God says that they are “in Jesus” and we already know that He no longer is in the grave—He “rose again” and has ascended into heaven. Therefore, God here clearly teaches that at death a Christian goes immediately to heaven to be in the presence of Jesus Christ.
• Thirdly, we can be sure that they already have gone into the presence of God because if they were not already in Heaven “with him,” He surely could not bring them “with him” when He returns.
• This is one of God’s greatest promises to us about our departed Christian loved ones. BELIEVE IT, BE COMFORTED AND REJOICE!
Vs. 15, “For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep.”
•Those of us Christians who might still be alive when Christ returns will not prevent them, that is, get into His presence before our departed loved ones will. They already are with Him!
Vs. 16, “For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:”
• When Christ returns, He will resurrect even the dead bodies of our departed loved ones and those glorified bodies will be reunited with their spirits that will return from heaven with Jesus Christ.
Vs. 17, “Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.”
• In the very next instant we that have not died “shall be caught up together with them in the clouds.” We will be “with them” (with our loved ones) once again. Oh, what a reunion! Then we all shall forever be with our blessed Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Vs. 18, “Wherefore comfort one another with these words.”
My dear Christian brother or sister, BELIEVE THESE BIBLICAL TRUTHS, BE COMFORTED and REJOICE for your departed loved one. Above all love God supremely, honor Him now with your Christian testimony of hope and please comfort others now by letting them see your joy and peace.
In this time of bereavement may God bless you with all His ineffable love and sweet consolation and comfort.
However, if in these moments of your great grief and sorrow, you cannot find comfort and peace from God’s Word, then perhaps what you really need is to have a saving relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. He is the only one who can give you real comfort!
You can be saved now if you will first believe these Gospel truths. Believe that Jesus Christ, “the Son of God,” loves you. Believe that He died for you to suffer, as your substitute, the punishment that you deserve for ALL your sins.
Believe that our Lord Jesus Christ then was resurrected from the dead and that He lives today and His Holy Spirit is with you now and will save you if you will let Him.
Then you must repent toward God. That is, you must allow Him to enter into you as your new life. “Except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish” (Luke 13:3). You must put all your faith in Jesus Christ alone as your sufficient Savior. “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved” (Acts 16:31).
Please PRAY right now and SURRENDER your entire life to the Lord Jesus Christ and ASK Him to save you and BELIEVE that He will do it immediately.
“If thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness: and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation ... 13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved” (Rom. 10 9, 10, 13).
He is waiting and His Holy Spirit is listening for your prayer! Do not delay! Satan is trying try to stop you!
If you will pray now and surrender your life to Jesus Christ and receive Him as your only Lord and your all sufficient Savior, please send me an email to the address below so that I can rejoice with you and pray for you.
